Best XM Account for EA Trading: Matching XMTrading Account Types to Your Expert Advisor
XMTrading allows expert advisors on both MT4 and MT5, so there is no single best account: choose by your EA's holding time, swap exposure and lot size. For cashback, trades of 5 minutes or less earn no IB commission under XMTrading's public partner terms, so very short-term EAs may earn little or nothing.

Disclosure: CB-Dogs receives an advertising (referral) fee — sometimes called an IB commission — from brokers for accounts opened or linked through us, and returns part of it to you as cashback, the same model used by cashback and points sites. This does not change your trading costs.

If you run an expert advisor (EA) at XMTrading, the account type changes three things that matter to an automated strategy: what each trade costs, whether overnight positions are charged swap, and whether the trades earn cashback at all. This guide matches the four XMTrading account types (Standard, Micro, KIWAMI, Zero) to common EA styles. It does not recommend an EA or promise any result, and it is not investment advice.
Key takeaways
- XMTrading's platform page states that EAs (robots) are allowed on both MT4 and MT5. MT5 also has a multi-thread strategy tester, which is much faster than MT4's single-thread tester for backtests.
- The four account types differ mainly in cost structure: Standard and Micro have no commission, KIWAMI has a tighter marketing spread and is swap-free on specific instruments, and Zero has spreads from 0 pips plus a commission of 10 USD per 100,000 USD traded.
- All four share a 50% margin call, a 20% stop-out and a cap of 200 open positions plus pending orders per account. A grid or martingale EA can reach that cap, so check your EA's maximum order count.
- For cashback, XMTrading's public partner terms exclude trades lasting 5 minutes or less, trades closed with Close By, and churning. EA scalping is allowed if it is not churning, but a scalper whose trades mostly close within 5 minutes may earn little cashback.
- CB-Dogs pays 60% of the IB commission XMTrading actually pays. Standard and Micro rates are shown live in the table below; KIWAMI and Zero rates are still being confirmed.
Can you run an EA at XMTrading?
Yes. XMTrading's platforms page lists MT4 and MT5 for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, and states that EAs and robots can be used on both. The EA runs on whichever machine keeps your terminal online, so a desktop that sleeps or loses its connection will stop the EA. Which platform to use is covered in XM MT4 vs MT5; for EA work the main points are:
- MT5 has a multi-thread strategy tester (fast), more timeframes and order types, and unlimited historical data on the server.
- MT4 has a single-thread tester (slow) and a limited history search period. An EA written in MQL4 cannot run on MT5 without being rewritten in MQL5, so the language of your EA often decides the platform.
- On Zero accounts the commission is charged differently: on MT4 the round trip is charged at open, on MT5 it is charged at open and at close.
The terminal time zone cannot be changed. Server time is GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer, which matters if your EA uses time filters.
The four account types, from an EA's point of view
The table uses XMTrading's official account-type pages. The specs that are the same on all four: base currency USD, EUR or JPY; margin call 50%; stop-out 20%; minimum deposit 5 USD; minimum trade size 0.01 lot; maximum 200 open positions plus pending orders per account; market execution.
| Standard | Micro | KIWAMI | Zero | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Max leverage | 1000:1 | 1000:1 | 1000:1 | 500:1 |
| Marketing minimum spread | from 1 pip | from 1 pip | from 0.6 pips | from 0 pips |
| Commission | none | none | none | 10 USD per 100,000 USD traded |
| Swap-free | no | no | specific instruments only | no |
| Lot size | 1 lot = 100,000 units | 1 lot = 1,000 units | not covered here | not covered here |
Spreads are minimums in XMTrading's own units, and live spreads are wider, especially around news and at rollover. Leverage and available instruments can vary by country and regulation. See our KIWAMI account review for what the swap-free label does and does not cover.
Hedging is allowed within a single account but not across two accounts. XMTrading also states a negative balance reset for all clients, meaning you cannot lose more than you deposited. That is relevant for a runaway EA, but it does not protect the deposit itself.
Match the account to the EA type
Scalping EAs (very short holding time)
Per-trade cost dominates here. Zero is the usual candidate because the spread is near zero, but you must model the 10 USD per 100,000 USD commission on every lot. KIWAMI's tighter spread with no commission is another option to test. Compare the all-in cost per round trip on a demo, not just the headline spread. Our guide on forex trading costs for EA traders shows how to total it.
The cashback side matters just as much. XMTrading's public partner terms say trades lasting 5 minutes or less (open to close) earn no IB commission, trades closed with Close By or multiple Close By are excluded, and churning, meaning trades executed only to generate commission, is excluded. The terms state that EA scalping is allowed when it is not churning. Since CB-Dogs pays 60% of the IB commission XMTrading actually pays, a scalper with an average hold of 2 to 3 minutes could earn little or no cashback. See which XM trades are excluded from cashback and what churning means. Do not lengthen holding times artificially to collect cashback; that distorts your strategy and can look like exactly what the terms prohibit.
Grid and martingale EAs
These open many positions and add to losers. Three account limits matter:
- 200 positions plus pending orders per account. A deep grid can reach it. Check your EA's maximum simultaneous orders, including pendings.
- Margin call 50% and stop-out 20%. Positions are closed automatically at a 20% margin level, and a martingale sizing sequence consumes margin quickly. Higher leverage lets you open more size but does not make the strategy safer.
- Swap. Grids that hold positions for days accumulate swap. XMTrading's pages show swap as different for long and short, changing daily, and tripled on Wednesday for spot FX and metals.
Standard or Micro is the sensible place to test such an EA first: no commission, and Micro's smaller lot size lets you run the same logic with less capital at risk. Grid and martingale logic can lose the whole account in a single adverse move; we are not suggesting it is suitable.
Swing and position EAs (holds of hours to days)
A low trade count makes commission and spread less important than swap and entry slippage. Standard is the simplest choice. These EAs also fit the cashback exclusions most naturally, since holding times are far above 5 minutes.
Swap-sensitive EAs (carry or long holds)
If your EA holds positions across rollover and swap is a meaningful cost, look at KIWAMI, which XMTrading describes as swap-free on specific instruments. The key word is specific: confirm that the instruments your EA trades are on the swap-free list in your XMTrading Portal before you choose the account. For gold, XMTrading's precious-metals page lists KIWAMI GOLD# with swap of 0/0, but that is not a blanket statement for every symbol.
Cashback with an EA: the holding-time check
CB-Dogs cashback is 60% of the IB commission XMTrading actually pays on your account, per lot traded, regardless of profit or loss. The IB commission is paid per standard lot round turn (currencies 100,000 units, gold 100 oz, silver 5,000 oz). A micro lot is one hundredth of a standard lot. The current rates:
| Account type | Rebate / lot (USDT) |
|---|---|
| StandardSpread-based account, no commission. | 1.8 |
| MicroShown per micro lot (1,000 units), which is 1/100 of a standard lot, so the amount is 1/100 of the Standard amount. | 0.018(1 micro lot = 1,000 units) |
| KiwamiXM's tightened-spread account tier available in select regions. Our rebate for this account type is still being confirmed with XM and will be added here. | Rate to be confirmed |
| ZeroCommission-based account. Rebate is paid in addition to the raw spread, and the commission you pay is unaffected. Our rebate for this account type is still being confirmed with XM and will be added here. | Rate to be confirmed |
Provisional rate
KIWAMI and Zero rates are being confirmed, so we do not state them. Before you choose between accounts on cashback grounds, add up the cost difference. Cashback offsets a small part of trading cost; it does not turn a losing strategy into a profitable one. The relationship is explored in forex rebates for EA traders and in chasing rebates vs trading edge.
Practical steps for an EA:
- Export your EA's trade history and compute the share of trades closed in 5 minutes or less. Those trades are probably not eligible.
- Avoid Close By in your EA logic; close each position separately.
- Remember that trades supported by bonus credit earn proportionally less IB commission, since the commission is scaled to the share of your own funds in the required margin.
- Use the calculator with your eligible lots, not total lots, for a realistic estimate.
Choosing: a short decision guide
- Short-term scalper, most trades under 5 minutes: cost is the main question; cashback will be minimal. Compare Zero and KIWAMI demos for all-in cost.
- Intraday EA with holds of 10 minutes or more: Standard or Zero depending on all-in cost; cashback is more relevant.
- Grid or martingale: Standard or Micro for testing, and read the 200-order cap and stop-out first.
- Swing or carry EA: Standard, or KIWAMI if your instruments are swap-free there.
- Small account, learning the EA: Micro (0.1 lot minimum on MT5, 0.01 on MT4). Note that there is no Micro demo at XMTrading.
Demo accounts exist for Standard, Zero and KIWAMI, with a settable balance and no time limit, but a demo unused for 60 days or more is closed automatically. Run the EA on a demo of the account type you intend to use before going live. You can have up to 10 live and 5 demo accounts at once, so testing two account types side by side is possible.
