Best XM Account for Beginners: Standard, Micro, KIWAMI or Zero?
For most beginners the sensible path is a demo account first, then a Micro or Standard account with small positions. Micro suits very small balances, Standard suits 0.01-lot sizing, and KIWAMI and Zero fit better once you can compare live costs.

If you are new to trading and looking at XMTrading, the account choice can feel bigger than it is. All four account types share the same 5 USD minimum deposit, the same margin call and stop-out levels, and the same negative balance reset. The real differences are lot size, bonuses, commission and spread. This guide is a decision guide for beginners: which account to look at first, in what order, and what to avoid. For a full side-by-side specification table, see XM account types compared, and for a deep look at one account see the XM Micro account review.
Key takeaways
- All four XMTrading account types (Standard, Micro, KIWAMI, Zero) have a 5 USD minimum deposit, a 50% margin call and a 20% stop-out. Beginners are not forced into any one account by the entry requirements.
- A sensible path is: practise on a demo account (Standard, Zero or KIWAMI; there is no Micro demo), then move to a Micro or Standard account and trade the smallest size you can.
- Micro lets you trade very small positions (1 lot = 1,000 units, minimum 0.1 lot on MT5 or 0.01 lot on MT4). Standard's smallest trade is 0.01 lot of 100,000 units, which is also 1,000 units.
- KIWAMI (no deposit bonus) and Zero (commission, 500:1 leverage cap, no deposit bonus) are usually better as a second step, once you can compare live costs yourself.
- Bonuses come with terms. When bonus money supports your required margin, the IB commission is reduced in proportion, and so is your cashback.
What is the same on every account
Before choosing, it helps to know what you do not need to worry about. On all four XMTrading account types:
- The minimum deposit is 5 USD (converted if you deposit in another currency).
- Margin call is 50% and stop-out is 20%. See XM stop-out level for what happens when your margin level falls.
- A negative balance reset applies to all clients, so you cannot lose more than you deposited.
- The account-opening bonus is 13,000 JPY (terms apply).
- Base currency can be USD, EUR or JPY.
So the question is not "which account is safe". It is "which account lets me trade small, learn cheaply and keep the rules simple".
The four accounts from a beginner's point of view
| Standard | Micro | KIWAMI | Zero | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lot equals | 100,000 units | 1,000 units | see Standard | see Standard |
| Smallest trade | 0.01 lot (1,000 units) | 0.1 lot on MT5 (100 units), 0.01 lot on MT4 (10 units) | 0.01 lot | 0.01 lot |
| Commission | None | None | None | 10 USD per 100,000 USD traded |
| Max leverage | 1000:1 | 1000:1 | 1000:1 | 500:1 |
| Deposit bonus (terms apply) | 100% | 100% up to 500 USD, then 20% up to 10,000 USD | None | None |
| Demo available | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Swap-free | No | No | Specific instruments only | No |
Standard is the default and the simplest to reason about: no commission, lots of 100,000 units, and the widest bonus eligibility together with Micro. Its smallest trade is 0.01 lot, which equals 1,000 units. That is already small enough for most beginners.
Micro is the same price structure (spreads from 1 pip, no commission) with a smaller contract: 1 lot is 1,000 units. On MT5 the minimum is 0.1 lot, which is 100 units. If your balance is only a few dozen dollars and you want positions that barely move the account, Micro offers finer steps than Standard. The cost per unit of exposure is not lower than Standard; only the size is smaller. Full details are in the Micro account review.
KIWAMI advertises spreads from 0.6 pips with no commission, and is swap-free on specific instruments. It has no deposit bonus. A beginner who does not hold positions overnight gains little from swap-free, and tighter spreads only matter once you trade enough for costs to add up.
Zero advertises spreads from 0 pips but charges commission, and its leverage is capped at 500:1. Spread plus commission is harder to judge at a glance. For a beginner it adds one more number to track without a clear benefit yet.
A sensible path: demo, then small and simple
There is no single best account for everyone, but there is a reasonable order of steps.
- Open a demo first. XMTrading allows demos on Standard, Zero and KIWAMI (not Micro), with no time limit. A demo that is unused for more than 60 days is closed automatically, and you can open a new one at any time. You can set the demo balance to any amount, so set it close to the amount you plan to deposit. The demo gives you a feel for the platform, order types and how fast margin level moves. Prices on a demo are not a guarantee of live fills. See the XM demo account guide.
- Go live with Micro or Standard, with the smallest size. Choose Micro if your balance is very small or you want to size in finer steps. Choose Standard if you are comfortable with 0.01-lot trades and want the flat 100% deposit bonus option (terms apply). Either way, the aim for the first weeks is to learn, not to earn.
- Revisit KIWAMI or Zero later. Once you have a few weeks of live trading and know your typical pair, session and size, compare the real spreads (and Zero's commission) on a demo of each type. Account types cannot be converted after opening, so a change means opening an additional account. Up to 10 live accounts are allowed on the same personal details.
Small deposit: does 5 USD make sense?
The 5 USD minimum is a technical minimum, not a recommended starting balance. With a very small balance even the smallest position can reach the stop-out after a modest move, and a small account has little room for spread costs. If you want to start small, Micro's finer sizing helps a little, but treat the first deposit as money you are prepared to lose while you learn. Funding methods can have their own minimums, so check the current funding page. Also remember that an account with no activity for 90 days becomes dormant and may be charged 10 USD per month (or the whole balance if under 10 USD), so do not leave a tiny balance sitting idle.
Bonuses and cashback: the part beginners often miss
XMTrading offers a 13,000 JPY account-opening bonus on all four types and deposit bonuses on Standard and Micro (terms apply). Bonuses can be attractive, but they interact with IB commission.
According to XMTrading's publicly available partner program terms, when the required margin for a trade is supported by granted bonus, the introducer's commission is calculated in proportion to the share of the client's own funds in that required margin. The terms give an example: with a 100% bonus, only about half of the required margin is the client's own money, so the IB receives about half of the normal rebate on that trade. Trading that uses a no-deposit trading bonus (and profits from it) is not counted for IB commission at all, unless the client deposits and trades with own funds.
CB-Dogs pays 60% of the IB commission XMTrading actually pays for your account. So bonus-supported trades earn proportionally less cashback, and in some cases none. This is not a reason to avoid a bonus, but it is a reason to know which one you value more. Our articles XM bonus and cashback and trades excluded from cashback explain the details. Terms can change, so check the current bonus conditions before you register.
What cashback looks like on each account
Cashback is paid per lot traded, regardless of profit or loss. A Micro lot is 1,000 units, which is 1/100 of a standard lot, so a Micro lot earns about 1/100 of the Standard per-lot figure. Use the live table instead of any number written here:
| Account type | Rebate / lot (USDT) |
|---|---|
| StandardSpread-based account, no commission. | 1.8 |
| MicroShown per micro lot (1,000 units), which is 1/100 of a standard lot, so the amount is 1/100 of the Standard amount. | 0.018(1 micro lot = 1,000 units) |
| KiwamiXM's tightened-spread account tier available in select regions. Our rebate for this account type is still being confirmed with XM and will be added here. | Rate to be confirmed |
| ZeroCommission-based account. Rebate is paid in addition to the raw spread, and the commission you pay is unaffected. Our rebate for this account type is still being confirmed with XM and will be added here. | Rate to be confirmed |
Provisional rate
For a purely illustrative sense of scale (example figures, not a promise): if the Standard rate were 1.8 USDT per standard lot, then trading 0.01 lot ten times in a month (0.1 lot in total) would earn about 0.18 USDT. For a beginner, cashback is a small offset against trading costs, not an income source. Cashback is paid in USDT on the TRC20 network only; the minimum withdrawal is 10 USDT, and withdrawals of 50 USDT or more are free (3 USDT fee below 50 USDT). Allow roughly three to four weeks from trade to withdrawable cashback. Very short trades of five minutes or less are not counted for IB commission, which matters for beginners who scalp; see the excluded-trades article above.
To link cashback, register with CB-Dogs first and then open the account through the CB-Dogs flow. The steps are in how to open an XM account and link cashback.
Quick decision guide
- I want to try trading with the smallest possible risk: demo first, then Micro with the minimum size.
- I am comfortable with 0.01-lot trades and want the simplest structure: Standard.
- I want a deposit bonus: Standard or Micro only (terms apply, and cashback is reduced on bonus-supported margin).
- I plan to hold positions overnight, especially gold: read about KIWAMI's swap-free instruments, but confirm the specification of your symbol first.
- I already trade often and want to cut costs: compare live spreads on KIWAMI and Zero demos before moving.
None of this is trading advice. No account type changes your odds of making money; it only changes size, cost structure and bonus eligibility.
There is no single best one, but a common sensible path is a demo account first, then a Micro or Standard account with the smallest position size. Both have no commission and spreads from 1 pip.
Summary
For most new traders, the account type matters less than the order of steps: demo, then Micro or Standard at minimum size, then compare KIWAMI and Zero only when you have real trading data. Weigh any bonus against its cashback effect, and read the live rate table for your chosen account before you open it.
